Deputy Sheriff is a sworn Peace Officer position. Incumbents perform law enforcement and crime prevention work; patrol assigned areas, enforcing state and local laws; conduct investigations of misdemeanor and felony crimes; perform administrative and support work; and carry out related duties as assigned.

All uniformed patrol personnel are provided with a take-home patrol vehicle. Current work shifts are scheduled as four 10 hour days on, three days off. Incentive pay is available for Field Training Officers and assignment to Investigations.

Requirements


Deputy Sheriff Trainee

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalency certificate.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess, or obtain by appointment date, a valid California driver's license.
  • Must possess, or obtain during the probationary period a valid CPR and First aid certificate.

Deputy Sheriff

All of the above requirements, plus:

  • Must have, within the past three years, successfully completed a POST Basic Academy.

Deputy Sheriff - Lateral Entry

All of the above requirements, plus:

  • Must be currently employed with a POST certified California law enforcement agency.
  • Must possess a current POST Basic Certificate.

Selection Process

Anyone wishing to be considered in the selection process must file a completed application. All approved applicants must pass the following examinations:

  • A physical agility test.
  • A written examination.
  • An oral examination.
  • A written psychological examination.
  • An oral psychological examination.
  • A polygraph examination.
  • A thorough background examination.
  • A pre employment medical examination.


All applicants must be of good moral character with no felony convictions by a State, Federal, or foreign government of a crime which could have been punishable by imprisonment in a Federal Penitentiary or State Prison.

All applicants must be United States citizens or permanent resident aliens who are eligible for, and have applied for, citizenship at least one year before application for employment.

Applicants must be free from any active organic disease, must meet POST vision standards, must be able to pass a plate test of color vision, and meet department hearing standards.

The following types of illegal drug use or possession will be considered as automatic disqualifies. No exceptions!

  • Use or possession of marijuana within one year prior to application.
  • Use or possession of a drug classified as a hallucinogenic.
  • Use of ANY injectable drug unless prescribed.
  • Use of illegal anabolic steroid within one year prior to application.
  • Any other use or possession of an illegal drug not mentioned within three years of application.

All successful candidates will also be required to successfully complete a one year probationary term, prior to achieving permanent full time employment status.
